HOUSTON, April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Former U.S. Secretary of Commerce Bob Mosbacher, chairman of the fund-raising gala celebrating the 75th and 74th birthdays of President and Mrs. George Bush and benefiting The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, announced today April 13, 1999, the preliminary list of entertainers who will headline the event, which is called Milestones & Miracles.
The historic occasion, planned for June 10 in Houston's Astrodome/Astroarena complex, will be highlighted with appearances on the program by Reba McEntire, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant. Ricky Skaggs, Larry Gatlin, Gerald McRaney, Jim Nantz and tennis champion Chris Evert are also scheduled to appear. Vince Gill will perform live via satellite.
In making the announcement, Mosbacher said: "This is truly a star- spangled entertainment line-up for a star-spangled night. In celebrating this special occasion, these performers also will join the Bushes in their deeply- felt commitment to eliminating cancer while also helping to assure that cutting-edge cancer research is at the forefront in M. D. Anderson Cancer Center's future."
Proceeds from the event will establish The George and Barbara Bush Endowment for Innovative Cancer Research. A fund-raising goal of $10 million has been set for the endowment.
Also joining the former first couple for the evening's festivities are their children and their spouses. Texas Gov. George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, will serve as honorary chairs while Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and his wife, Columba; Neil and Sharon Bush; Marvin and Margaret Bush; and Bobby and Doro Koch will serve as honorary co-chairs. The Bush children are working up an irreverent roast for their parents during the show.
The Houston-based event management and production firm of Ward & Ames is designing the evening's festivities for Milestones & Miracles.
